ID3-TagIT MUST NOT DIE !!

ID3-TagIT MUST NOT DIE !!

Postby Tagger on Fri Nov 23, 2007 7:28 am

Michael,

your ID3-TagIT is one of the best tools ever and it must not die.
I can understand you haven't got the time to support or develop the tool any further.
But is that a reason to let such a great tool die?

I'm sure there are enough people out there who are skilled and willing to contribute to an open source project.

I agree. I would be interested in helping out. If you decide to release it open source I would recommend checkingout codeplex.com, Microsoft's open source project hosting site.

Let me know if I can be of assistance.

I totally agree, would love to see a open source version. Or not even totally open source but able to develop it further and be able to use it.

Let us know if your interested in it... :D

It would be awesome to have an open source version of this project.
Unfortunately it's based on .Net, so a linux version wouldn't exist, but at least I would guess, that it would learn to use vorbis. ;)

(I know, there is mono...)

Many thanks to Michael

to give us this great ID3 tagger. I would love to continue but aren't able to give other contributions than general support to users. But there are many others able to code and to continue on the project. Let's turn ID3TagIT into Open Source and distribute the work to a bunch of people, including a guided forum for support. That's my suggestion how the project can continue.

Also thanks for opening this forum and the possibility to send our opinions.

Regards
Helmut

Enough talk, let's do this

Postby jamesDolphin on Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:06 am

I'm currently a Java / C# developer and will donate my time to maintaining this product. It seems like we need somebody to step up and spearhead this movement, someone with some experience at working in the open-source realm. I do not have such experience, but if there is anyone who is willing to help me out, to get this going on the right foot, then please PM me. Or if you'd like to run this project but want a solid commitment, then I volunteer to be a manager or lead for the project. Either way, someone needs to take charge, so we can save this program. PM me for any suggestions/comments.

Mono should work great.

I just have to try again: Michael, please let others improve your work! You don't have to open source it (although that would be the best), you could just give cvs access to a handful of developers.

I have email Michael several times with no response. I am begining to wonder if he is still even on the web.

I have been looking at his code via reflector and I think it would be very difficult to create a clone of this application. There have been several frameworks made available also that ease the difficulty of working with ID3 tags.

I say that if we don't hear something soon, we just start working on requirements and what we need to build and start building. I believe the hopes of getting the original source code are in vain. We can say as much as we want that the project was inspired by ID3-TagIt all we want.

Thoughts?

Naaah, please no mono. :(

Actually I'm thinking about making my own project based on Qt, inspired by ID3-tagit (note that I talk about "inspired", it won't be a "copy").
Pros:
- Should be easy to make it multiplatform
- There are good libraries, at least under linux, for freedb and musicbrainz access
- Qt should provide easy GUI creation & maintaining, so one could concentrate on other thing
- Not .Net ;-)

Cons:
- Development from scratch, needs quite some time
- I don't have that much experience programming
- Time (from my side)

I guess I _will_ start it, even if ID3-Tagit will be released under an open source licence. There are several reasons for that. One of them is, that I want to gain experience programming in C++. I'm targeting to start development on it maybe around May or June, because then I should have the time for it. Currently most of it is in my head, I've got a few ideas for features etc. ;)

Edit: BTW, cvs is the last thing in the world, that I would use. ;)

I too am begining a project inspired by this product. ID3Tagger on http://codeplex.com. It will be a .NET application and will deal mainly with reading and writting tags to audio files.

I do not need the funtionality to update from any external source I am using ID3 Tag-It currently to tag Podcast episodes that I have created so I will focus on that functionality.

Might change the name to PodcastTag-IT to show the clear focus of the app and give omage to id3tagit.

I am also a C# and Java programmer, and would love to join the effort to keep this project alive and moving forward. I also have many years of C++ experience, but I don't have the kind of spare time necessary to participate in a C++ effort (too little return on investment).

I actually created a quick utility in C# for backing up ID3 tags to an XML file (a feature I wish ID3-TagIT had). It represents a couple of days' worth of work. I put it on Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/mp3tagbackup/) in the hopes that it would benefit others, and as an experiment in open source projects.

I just wish to thank Michael for this great tool and the work he invested in it!

I've searched a lot for tools that help me tag my mess, that is, before i stumbled upon id3-TagIt some years ago. It had some flaws, but still was by far the best tagger i've seen yet.

I can only subscribe to the open-source idea. The worst that could happen was that it's just dead. So plz, Michael, if you're not planning to make this project commercial, see what the community can do to takt it to new heights!

ID3Tagit DARF NICHT STERBEN!

ID3Tagit DARF NICHT STERBEN!

Hallo,

Danke mal für die Entwicklung und die besten Wünsche für die Zukunft;

I read this thread yesterday, and gave it some thought overnight. My background as a developer is C++/VisualC++ and Java. I believe a
group of us should pick up id3-tagit's functionality as a starting point and carry it forward.

It's regrettable that id3-tagit as it current stands is a Windows-only app. I believe a replacement app should be build that can be used on any platform.

My current thinking is that we should build a java servlet that can perform these functions. Using Java allows the use of the millions of already-written Java classes. Building it as a servlet lets us use a browser for the UI. Using browsers for the UI, and Java for the back-end, would allow platform independence. I've recently learned of Yahoo's YUI project - perhaps using this might be extremely useful in achieving browser independence.

What do you think?

Here's Google translation of Welt's posting:
D3Tagit MAY NOT DIE!

Hallo,

times between a German posting.
I close I fully share this view here.
It is the best tagger, I have the untergekommen(?).
The Practical is that the file names can be rewritten, because these are also very often the A **.
I am now on Linux and have the old version running under Wine
Unfortunately, only 60% stable.
Because the. NET Framework, there's no chance the new run to get, except that Werkl is open source.
Because there is a replica. NET on Linux, which is called mono.

So Michael, have mercy on you when you read these lines.

Lars, if you somehow reach the Michael, then try him in the open source direction.
The project is it really worth it!

I too sing the praises of this tool.

Thank you for the development times and the best wishes for the future;
